Jamie Airmet - FGN
(Ferron,
Utah) - If you put the cross-hairs of a
scope in the
middle of
the state,
you will be
looking at a
town called
Ferron. It
was once
targeted by
stockmen who
discovered
that Ferron
Creek was a
bull’s eye
of a natural
grazing
drift
between the
Wasatch
Plateau and
the winter
range on the
San Rafael
Swell. Step
forward a
hundred
years and
with the
completion
of the
Millsite Dam
and
Reservoir
it’s now
targeted for
some great
recreation.
Why all the
references
to shooting,
you might
ask? Well,
I’m trying
to prepare
you for some
good ol’
target golf!
The Millsite Golf Course is tucked beneath
the dam, set on top the plateaus, and every
elevation in between. You shoot around
Mancos Shale cliffs on the low fairways and
then near drastic drop-offs on the high
ones, only to be rewarded by some tightly
placed greens. Don’t be too quick to load
your golf bag with only irons because those
woods will still come in play on plenty of
holes on this Par 36, 3200 yard course. The
contrast from one fairway to the next will
keep your interest throughout the round.
Along with the differences in elevation come
the beautiful contrast of colors, the greens
of grass, sage and cedars are outlined by
the rich and warm tones of the Castle
Country rock. Play a round in the late
afternoon and these colors only get better.
Scott Truman designed this course in 1988
and he took full advantage of the tools
Mother Nature gave. He used the winding
canyons with the play of shadows from the
cliffs and on up to the bluffs where club
selection is critical for control. Circling
breezes come into play throughout and just
in case that wasn’t enough, he made sure to
incorporate the man-made dam’s spillway
between the 2nd tee box and fairway for a
bit of a challenge. Then again on the 7th,
just beneath the massive 50 foot waterfall
he tucked in the green. Lining up your putt
while this beautiful and thundering
waterfall excites your senses is a welcoming
challenge. The spillway runs from May to
June and you can visit their web site
www.millsitegolfcourse.com or
call for an exact schedule of the run off
dates.
This course has all the amenities needed for
a great golf day! There is a club house with
snack bar and a Pro Shop with apparel
(including rental clubs if you are
unprepared), as well as a chipping area,
putting green, and a teaching Pro on staff.
Although it is a 9 hole course, a re-round
will definitely feel necessary and will be
anything but repetitious. Ground breaking
for a new 9 is scheduled in Spring of 08
with the completion in Spring of 09. I
haven’t yet seen the design of this next 9
but, if it’s anything like the first then it
will be a direct hit!......more
