Hidden Valley
Country Club began in 1957 when Fort Douglas Country Club purchased 284 acres of
land at the current Sandy location to replace their golf course that was located
on the campus of the University of Utah. The purchase price for the 284 acres,
282 shares of Little Willow Irrigation and 115 shares of the Draper Irrigation
was $337,000.
Since the Fort Douglas golf course was on public land and could not be held
privately, the University began operating the golf course in 1959; which is the
same year Hidden Valley opened the original 18-hole golf course designed by the
renowned architect William Bell, Jr. from Pasadena, California. In 1957, a
letter was mailed to the members of Fort Douglas, wherein Mr. Bell stated that
the Sandy location was well suited for a golf course and the area should produce
a high class residential neighborhood.
In 1977 Hidden Valley sold 50 acres of what it considered surplus land. That
land is now the development which runs parallel to 17th East in Sandy, on the
west side of the golf course. In 1979 the Club decided to construct an
additional nine holes of golf for approximately $441,000. Local golf course
architect William Neff was hired for the design work and in the spring of 1980
the additional nine holes were open for play. Today, those additional golf holes
are referred to as the Mountain Nine and have some of the most scenic golf holes
in the Salt Lake Valley.
In 1997 the equity members of the Fort Douglas / Hidden Valley Country Club
voted to sell the Fort Douglas Clubhouse to the James L. White Jewish Community
Center. The proceeds from the sale were allocated for the construction of a new
Clubhouse which was erected at the current Hidden Valley site. The construction
of the 44,000 square foot facility began in the spring of 2000 and was completed
in the summer of 2001 at a cost of approximately $6.5 million.
Hidden Valley was selected as the #1 rated golf course in Utah, for 2001-2002
and consistently places in the top 10 year after year. |
